I buy most of my books second-hand, and not only because they are cheaper. A used book arrives with evidence. Someone has underlined a sentence on page forty and then, as far as I can tell, stopped reading. Someone else has argued with the author in the margin in very small handwriting. My favourite is a train ticket left between two pages, which tells you exactly how far somebody got on one journey and roughly how slowly they read. None of this is in the text. It is the sort of thing a new copy cannot give you, and it is why I will put up with a cracked spine.
