I told him I understood, paid, and went home with a phone that worked perfectly for four days. On the fifth it refused to charge. A repair shop told me the port had been replaced, badly, probably more than once. The repair would cost roughly what I had saved, assuming nothing else was wrong. I am not sure I was lied to. Everything he said may well have been true. But he had been careful to let me believe the rest, and by and large that is how it is done.
