The film is, without question, the most ambitious thing the director has attempted, and it is a pleasure to report that the costumes are magnificent throughout. The plot concerns a translator who discovers that a manuscript she has been hired to work on may be a forgery. This is a fine premise, handled here with a thoroughness that leaves very little to the viewer, and explained twice in case the first time was too subtle. The lead gives a performance of considerable technical control. One admires it in much the way one admires a well-made cabinet. The supporting cast, who have less to work with, come off rather better. At two hours and fifty minutes it is not a short film, and the final act in particular has the quality of a man searching his pockets for keys he is already holding. Those who stay to the end will find that the explanation was available at the forty-minute mark. It will, I suspect, do very well. The audience it was made for is large, loyal and not in the habit of reading reviews — which, on this occasion, may be the kindest thing I can say about either of us.
